The cloud forests of Ecuador, also known as pre-montane or subtropical rainforests, stretch along the slopes of the Andes at elevations between 900 and 2,500 meters. These forests are pristine ecosystems of exceptional biodiversity, many of which remain only lightly studied in terms of their wildlife and plant life.

Although Ecuador covers just 276,880 km²—about half the size of France and nearly the same size as Colorado in the United States—the Ecuadorian cloud forest is recognized as one of the planet’s richest biodiversity hotspots. It harbors approximately 17% of the world’s plant species and nearly 20% of global bird diversity.

Despite being one of the smallest countries in South America, Ecuador is home to almost 50% of the continent’s bird species. Over 500 species of birds inhabit the cloud forest, including 35 species of hummingbirds (out of 132 found in Ecuador and 300 across the Americas). Among the most iconic species are the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and the Golden-headed Quetzal.

The cloud forests are also home to emblematic wildlife such as the Spectacled Bear, Howler Monkey, Puma, and countless species of orchids, butterflies, and other plants and animals.
